John and his son, Keean.John Eckert has been through a lot since that day in June 1999 when he sustained horrified injuries from an industrial accident. While working on an offshore tower, he fell and struck his back on a railing. Then fell the rest of the way down into the water. John couldn't move his legs when he resurfaced in the water. A helicopter transferred him to a hospital. Over the next three years he had two fusion surgeries in his lower back and extensive therapy.

John began his own exercise program after platowing with therapy. He started with stretching, then eased into yoga. A couple months later he was in the gym working out on the recumbent bike and elliptical trainer. As John progressed with his program he began to regain some muscle control while decreasing his pain, tingling and numbness he felt in the legs and back.

Recently, John has begun to mix some running into his routine. He started with a run/walk program on the treadmill and progressed that out onto the road. His walking time is slowly decreasing and this past July John entered a four mile race. Not only has the running and exercise improved John's fitness level but it has also helped him lose 50 lbs in the past six months. Plus achieve the ultimate goal of being able to share activities with his son!
